Week 5′s Game Day Beer of the Week: Three Floyds’ Zombie Dust

Throughout the week, we give you everything you could possibly need to watch ACC football this Saturday, except directions on which beer to share your gameday experience with. Well worry no more, because we now have you covered there, too. Each Friday, we’ll be providing a few beers of choice, highlighted by the featured “Beer of the Week.” Some of these are nationally available, while others might be a bit more California-centric (sorry!), but all should set you on your way to having a highly productive afternoon of watching football.

Game Day Beer of the Week, Week 5: Three Floyds Zombie Dust

For some beers, you hear and read a ton of hype, and you either tell yourself that a) I have to have it or b) there’s just no way it lives up. In many cases, I’m firmly in category A, and that goes double for a beer like Zombie Dust, which has a 100 score on Beer Advocate. The Indiana-based Three Floyds Brewing Company doesn’t have a ton of distribution out here in California, so it’s not exactly easy to find, but luckily my local specialty beer and wine shop managed to grab a limited shipment. It was bottled fresh the other day, which is critical with this beer, since the hop characteristics have a very short shelf life. It’s a Pale Ale, but tastes and smells like all the hoppy goodness of an IPA, without the bitterness at the end. Not to compare beers for the sake of it, but remove the bite from the backend of Stone’s excellent RuinTen IPA, and it’s a close facsimile to Zombie Dust. The fresh, fruity aroma and carbonation are the best I’ve ever had in a Pale Ale, while also not being too filling. If you have this beer nearby on a regular basis, consider yourself very lucky.

Other considerations this week:

Ballast Point Fathom IPL

Green Flash Green Bullet

Drake’s Denogginizer
