Week 3’s Game Day Beer of the Week: High Water Brewing Campfire Stout

Throughout the week, we give you everything you could possibly need to watch ACC football this Saturday, except directions on which beer to share your gameday experience with. Well worry no more, because we now have you covered there, too. Each Friday, we’ll be providing a few beers of choice, highlighted by the featured “Beer of the Week.” Some of these are nationally available, while others might be a bit more California-centric (sorry!), but all should set you on your way to having a highly productive afternoon of watching football.

The name might create a smoky expectation for some (it did for me, anyway), but instead what you get is a delicious, slightly sweet taste that will immediately remind you of s’mores. Rather than being an overwhelmingly sugary brew though, Campfire Stout manages to find the balance between delicious “novelty” flavor and quality beer production, with plenty of boozy notes (or as much as you’ll get with 6.5% ABV). Best of all, it’s not even that heavy. My first experience with it was a week or so ago on tap and I promptly grabbed another. It’s just that good, and if you’re so inclined, it’s available year-round. Problem is, it’s not that easy to locate, even in California. The San Leandro-based brewery has a lot more distribution in the NorCal area, though you can find it at select locations down here in SoCal as well (I had it at the Commons Ale House, for those who may be in or around Santa Monica). If you’re not around here, I’d recommend finding a trading partner ASAP.

Other considerations this week:

Big Sky Brewing Company Heavy Horse

Shipyard Pumpkinhead Ale

Oskar Blues Dale’s Pale Ale

Also, if you’re so inclined, follow me on Untappd. Happy drinking!
